Dear Habitat friends,

Housing costs reached an all-time high in the past year and the shortage of housing continues to worsen. People everywhere, especially parents and caretakers, are struggling to create better lives for their children, their parents, and their loved ones. Partnering with IVHFH is a tried-and-true path toward stability and transformation; when people have a safe, affordable place to live, EVERYTHING can change, and change is so desperately needed. Together we can do even more to change lives and transform futures, creating a brighter tomorrow for those who need it most.

Caretakers of their 83-year-old mother, Peg, Pam and her sister needed to transform their mom’s future to keep her living safely in her home. Peg lives alone on the family’s 150-year-old century farm. The old home lacks any accessibility features, and using a walker has become increasingly dangerous. Replacement of a tub/shower combo with a walk-in shower, installation of a wheelchair ramp, and a roof repair were some of the improvements our Helping Hands staff completed, which transformed Peg’s future into one of safety and security and replaced her family’s fear and despair with hope and peace.

Helping people like Peg transform their futures improves their quality of life and they can flourish where they live. Your support helped 36 households make affordable home repairs this year.

Future homeowner Nicole has been working toward her life-changing goal of homeownership since her first child was born. She is a single mother of two children, Alex and Mileena. Their current residence is a modest two-bedroom, one-bathroom house. Nicole decided to remodel the dining room into a third bedroom for more privacy and personal space for her growing children, but the downside was losing dining space where the family could come together for meals. Mileena has a severe sensitivity to mold and seasonal allergies and unfortunately, their 1970s mobile home triggers her symptoms and causes severe reactions. Nicole said the house needs a new roof and the air conditioner stopped working last year. Spending a significant portion of her income on repairs feels to her like throwing money away.

Helping families like Nicole’s move into decent, affordable Habitat homes empowers them to build better lives. It provides a pathway to financial stability, it provides safety for their children, and it creates a healthy environment in which the whole family can thrive. Your support the past year changed the lives of 6 families who built and purchased new homes in our community.

Consider the emotions Habitat homeowners like Nicole will feel when walking into her newly completed home for the first time, or how Peg felt seeing her newly improved and safe home—joy, relief, security, pride, gratitude, and hope. Your support throughout each year makes those moments possible. Continue sharing in those moments. Continue changing futures and transforming lives. Make a donation today.

Gratefully,

Scott Hawes

Executive Director
